Italian man to divorce wife of 77 years over 1940s affair/妻子70年前外遇 義99歲老翁訴請離婚 十二月 31

A 99-year-old Italian man and his wife of 77 years are to become the world’s oldest couple to divorce after his 96-year-old wife had an affair 70 years ago.

The husband, identified by lawyers in the case as Antonio C, found out about the adultery when he was looking through an old chest of just before Christmas.

He immediately asked his wife, who is identified as Rosa C, for a divorce as he was so upset over the betrayal.

Court papers released in Rome this week revealed that she sent letters to her lover during a secret affair in the 1940s.

The couple have five children, a dozen grandchildren and one great-grand child, but the discovery proved to be the last straw for the marriage, which reportedly ran into trouble ten years ago.

Lawyer Anna Orecchioni said: ‘The husband decided to file for divorce after finding the love letters. He felt betrayed and unable to carry on with the marriage which has lasted 77 years.’

The pair met in the 1930s when Antonio was posted in Naples as a Carabinieri officer.

In Britain the oldest couple to file for divorce was Bertie and Jessie Wood, who ended their 36-year marriage in 2009 when they were both two years away from becoming centenarians. (Metro)

The girl with the dancing eyebrows/眉毛會跳舞的少女 十二月 31

She certainly has never had a Botox injection.

In fact, a girl whose video is trending on YouTube has incredible control over her facial features – and in particular, her eyebrows.

Though unsuspecting at first, the cute girl shows quite the unusual talent as she causes her eyebrows to dance and spasm in rhythm.

The girl starts out with a shy smile to the camera, and an awkward grimace as she waits for the music to start.

What follows is a bizarre, hilarious, and slightly disturbing use of one’s facial muscles.

The video, uploaded to Youtube by user Theinternetisaweird calls it a girl’s ‘funny talent.’

Her identity – and the backstory as to how she learned such a talent – are unknown.

As the music starts, the girl coyly glances off to one side and dramatically raises one eyebrow.

Then, it’s onto the other side.

She does every arch in tempo and on point.

But the most impressive part of this video – which is fast becoming an internet sensation with more than two million hits – is when the girl begins doing what can only be called the Worm, but with her eyebrows.

One side starts the motion, and then the movement ripples to the other side, and then back again – still in tempo with the music.

Once the show is done, the girl returns to smiling at the camera, no doubt proud of her unusual and mesmerising talent. (Daily Mail)

15 men, three generations of one family have all worked as firemen at same station/一家族三代15人在同一消防隊任隊員 十二月 30

A leafy market town owes its safety to just one family – which has provided 15 firefighters to the local station over the last 50 years.

Paul Curtis, 39, is the third generation of his clan to man the pumps at Saffron Walden Fire Station in Essex and currently serves with nine relatives.

His family has attended an estimated 25,000 call-outs over the last half century and picked up a string of bravery awards along the way.

Paul, a father-of-three who also works for Highway Patrol, admits that working with family members makes the risks even more acute.

Mr Curtis lives in Saffron Walden with his wife Sherri, 39, a psychiatric nurse, and sons George, 10, Max, seven, and daughter Eve, four.

He follows in the footsteps of his father David Curtis, 62, and his grandfather Roy Vincent who started the family tradition when he signed up with his brother in 1961.

Paul’s grandfather and great uncle are local legends who were awarded recommendations for bravery after they fought a ferocious fire at a town central hotel.

Roy and his brother Barry battled to save the 33 guests at the Rose and Crown on December 26, 1969, they saved many lives but sadly 11 people died.

Roy Vincent, who died in 2006, joined the station in 1961 along with his brother Barry who died in the early 1980s.

Paul’s dad David Curtis, 62, followed in their footsteps in 1970, his cousin Paul Start, now 63, joined in 1973 and Paul’s uncle Dave Vincent signed up in 1980.

Another of Paul’s cousins Allen Start, now 39, was the next to join when he began working in 1988.

Paul himself started in 1990 and was soon joined by his younger brother Mark, 38, in 1992 and their cousin Simon Curtis, 38, in 1996.

Currently working at the station along with Paul are his cousins Jamie Start, 36, Mark Webb, 38, and Nigel Webb, 42.

He also works with his second cousins twins Daniel Foster, 23, Alan Foster, 23 and their dad Brian Foster, 56.

The Rose and Crown fire was one of a number of hotel fires which gave added impetus to the passing of the Fire Precautions Act in 1971. (Daily Mail)

Testicle-eating fish/專咬男人睪丸的「切蛋魚」 十二月 30

A British angler travelled to Papua New Guinea to snare a fish known to feast on the testicles of men.

After hearing two local men had died after being castrated by a fish while swimming in a river, causing them to bleed to death, Jeremy Wade went in search of the mysterious beast.

Following weeks of searching, he discovered the perpetrator was the Pacu fish, also known locally as the Ball Cutter, which is renowned for its powerful jaws.

After hooking the 40lb predator with a fishing line and dragging it onto his small fishing boat, Mr Wade was shocked by what he found.

‘When I reeled it in, it had this mouth which was surprisingly human-like, it is almost like they have teeth specially made for crushing.

‘They are like human molars and the fish have powerful jaw muscles. They are very deep bodied and solid like a carp, with strong muscles.’

Pacu fish are usually found in the Amazon, where they use their teeth to crack the tough shells of nuts and seeds.

Mr Wade’s adventure will be shown as part of his new series of River Monsters, aired on ITV next week. (wrapup)

Crocodile steals lawnmower/鱷魚奪取割草機 十二月 29

Bad-tempered Elvis the crocodile, who lives at an Australian reptile park, took matters into his own hands when a zookeeper’s lawnmower came too close for comfort.

The saltwater croc promptly stole the mower in the incident at Sydney’s Australian Reptile Park, grabbing it from operations manager Tim Faulkner and keeper Billy Collett and dragging it under the water of his enclosure.

It took staff at the park an hour to retrieve the machine as Elvis – who is 5m in length and weighs an impressive 500kg – sat watching his prize.

‘Once he got it, he just sat there and guarded it,’ Faulkner said.

‘It was his prize, his trophy. If it moved he would attack it again.’

He was eventually able to retrieve the mower from the water after Collett distracted Elvis with kangaroo meat.

It is not the first time the crocodile – who is thought to be around 50 years old – has displayed his temper, although he has never before stolen anything from zoo workers.

Prior to being captured in the northern city of Darwin he had attacked fishing boats in the harbour – and later ate two female crocodiles at a farm he was brought to before moving to the reptile park.

‘He is so full of testosterone that he views everything as a threat,’ Faulkner said. ‘Even potential mates.’ (Metro)

Baby has to be tickled to keep alive: Benn stops breathing several times a night/嬰兒一晚停止呼吸數次 須被搔癢才能活命 十二月 28

For most mothers, tickling their child is just a bit of fun. For Sanchia Norris, it is a way of keeping her son alive.

One-year-old Benn stops breathing several times each night and his mother has to tickle him to force him to start again.

Miss Norris, 41, is warned by an alarm when his breathing stops and rushes to his bedroom to rouse him.

The chartered tax adviser said: ‘I have to stimulate him in some way to wake him up which kickstarts him into breathing again. I either tickle him on the soles of his feet, or under his chin and on his stomach. It is enough to start him breathing again.

‘One night he stopped breathing 23 times and I had to keep tickling him each time to make him start breathing again.’

Benn suffers from apnea, one of the most common problems affecting premature babies. It causes breathing to stop for 20 seconds or more when they are asleep and occurs when a baby’s muscles and nervous system are not fully developed at birth.

Most grow out of it, but in the meantime, stimulation such as tickling is the most common method to get them breathing again.

When Benn was born in November last year, he was dangerously premature at just 24 weeks, and weighed only 1lb 12oz. Miss Norris, from Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire, said: ‘He was smaller than the length of my hand. The doctors told me that it was extremely unlikely that he would survive.’

But against the odds, after 18 weeks in hospital, Benn was well enough to be allowed home.

His mother is now fundraising for the Rosie Campaign in aid of the maternity unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital where Benn was born. (Daily Mail)

Amazing origami insects/令人驚奇的摺紙昆蟲 十二月 28

Don’t try swatting these bugs with a paper – because they’re made from it.

These incredible origami insects look just like the real thing.

The pieces of art are all made from a single piece of parchment and are the work of 31-year-old origami expert Brian Chan.

His brilliant bugs are so detailed they are almost capable of fooling the naked eye into thinking they are real.

Chan is craft instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and completes his amazing paper sculptures in his spare time.

He said: "I started by copying work of other authors about 20 years ago but after a while I was good enough to start coming up with my own pieces.

"When I was growing up, my parents bought me a lot of origami books they start with simple models and then the diagrams get more and more complex near the end, so they are good sources for independent learning.

"In 2004, one of the authors whose books I grew up with, Robert Lang, came to MIT to talk and I felt really inspired by what he said. (The Sun)

Casper the bath loving dog/喜歡泡澡的狗 十二月 27

The video of Casper the retriever enjoying his soak in the bath has become an online hit

In this amazing footage, taken by owner Christopher Geach, Casper is captured with his head almost fully submerged with only his snout sticking out above the water.

Mr Geach is rubbing doggy shampoo into his pet’s almost white coat while his wife Emma films his adorable reaction.

Such is Casper’s relaxation that he almost forgets to close his eyes as his head drops further into the water.

The video, entitled "Casper the bath loving dog", has already attracted more than half a million hits on You Tube since it was uploaded 11 days ago.

Mr Geach, 37, from Los Angeles, said: "Casper has a bath about once a week. Usually he will patiently sit or lay down on his stomach while I bathe him.

"On this particular day he was laying on his stomach and I lifted up on of his front paws to wash his belly and he just flipped over onto his back by himself. I began soaping up his underside and he was enjoying it so much he just let his head dip into the water until just his snout was showing.

"I called to my wife and said she needed to see this and to bring a camera. She is the one shooting the video.

"My 3-year-old son Michael’s reaction can be heard clearly with a hearty laugh when he sees the dog on his back. He then says, "Cassie, say cheese". His name is Casper but we sometimes call him ‘Cassie’ for short."

Mr Geach has three sons Benjamin, nine, Nicolas, six, and Michael, three, whose voice features in the video.

The family bought Casper in November last year and give him almost weekly baths because he gets dirty so quickly.

"He began getting frequent baths right from the beginning because he seems to love sprinklers and muddy puddles,"said Mr Geach.

"I don’t know why he loves it so much but it is adorable.

"Even when someone else is in the bath he will stand next to the tub and stare. Sometimes he will hang his head over the side and drink some of the water." (Daily Telegraph)

US climber, 15, sets 7-peak record/征服世界7大峰 美15歲少年破紀錄 十二月 26

While most of you were busily sucking down eggnog, Jordan Romero, the boy mountain climber who became the youngest to scale Mt. Everest, was down in Antarctica setting a seven-peak record. The 15-year-old reached the summit of Mt. Vinson Massif yesterday, making him the youngest to climb the tallest peak on each of the seven continents.

The Californian began his quest at the age of 10, when he climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. He later scaled Australia’s Mt. Kosciuszko in April 2007, Russia’s Mt. Elbrus in July 2007, Argentina’s Mt. Aconcagua in December 2007, North America’s Mt. McKinley in June 2008, and Indonesia’s Carstensz Pyramid in September 2009. His record beats that of Brit George Atkinson, who completed the feat in May at age 16. (BBC)

Great-gran still works full-time at 94 and has no plans to retire/94歲阿嬤仍全職工作 十二月 26

Sprightly Ada Hostler is thought to be the oldest female employee in the UK – still working full-time at the ripe old age of 94.

The great-grandmother has stunned family and friends by insisting she wants to continue putting in a 45-hour week despite breaking her hip last year.

She has been an administrator for Portsmouth-based Storytime Nursery, run by her daughter Janet Storey, 63, for 19 years.

She works from 8am until 6pm five days of the week and has no plans to retire – ignoring doctors’ advice to quit following her injury.

Mrs Hostler, from Portsmouth, Hants, lives by the motto ‘you’re a long time dead’ and even says she’s irritated by weekends – because she wants to work.

She added: ‘I never thought I would still be working in my 90s, I take one day at a time.

‘But I don’t ever want to stop. I get cross when it’s the weekend because I want to go back to work.

‘Doing all the figures helps keep my brain active and makes me feel younger.

‘It’s the children that keep me going. I love being around them. They are great company.’

Just last year Ada broke her hip and doctors said she would have to give up work as she would struggle to get around.

But within months she was up and walking again, with the help of a frame.

Widowed Mrs Hostler added: ‘I want to make the most out of life. You are dead a long time and don’t have much time to live in comparison.

‘I want to make sure that I enjoy all the time I have left.’ (Mail Online)
