Man balances 23 benches on his teeth/重慶30歲男用牙齒頂起23張板凳 創金氏紀錄 二月 18

A Chinese man set a new world record when he balanced 23 wooden benches – on his teeth.

Li Hongxiao, 30, performed the stunt in front of amazed shoppers in Chongqing city centre.

He managed to balance all 23 benches in the air for 11 seconds. The previous record was 14 benches.

The one metre long benches weighed a total of nearly 70kg.

The China-based Jinisi World Record Office issued a certificate to Li at the scene. (wrapup)

World’s Hottest Pepper: Trinidad Moruga Scorpion Proclaimed New Champion Chile/「蠍子紅椒」 全世界最辣 二月 17

There are super-hot chile varieties. And then there’s the sweat-inducing, tear-generating, mouth-on-fire Trinidad Moruga Scorpion.

With a name like that, it’s not surprising that months of research by the experts at New Mexico State University’s Chile Pepper Institute have identified the variety as the new hottest pepper on the planet.

The golf ball-sized pepper scored the highest among a handful of chile breeds reputed to be among the hottest in the world. Its mean heat topped more than 1.2 million units on the Scoville heat scale, while fruits from some individual plants reached 2 million heat units.

"You take a bite. It doesn’t seem so bad, and then it builds and it builds and it builds. So it is quite nasty," Paul Bosland, a renowned pepper expert and director of the chile institute, said of the pepper’s heat.

Researchers were pushed by hot sauce makers, seed producers and others in the spicy foods industry to establish the average heat levels for super-hot varieties in an effort to quash unscientific claims of which peppers are actually the hottest. (AP)

World’s tiniest chameleon/世界最小的變色龍 二月 16

Eagle-eyed researchers have discovered what is believed to be the world’s smallest chameleon in Madagascar.

The miniature chameleon, Brookesia micra, reaches a maximum length of just 29mm.

It was one of four new species found by German scientists in the north of the island, off Africa.

Researchers led by Dr Frank Glaw, from the Zoologische Staatssammlung in Munich, conducted fieldwork at night to find the easily overlooked animals.

"They mostly live in the leaf litter in the day… But at night they climb up and then you can spot them," said Dr Glaw.

The scientists carefully scanned the most likely habitats with torches and headlamps to find roosting sites.

They found the smallest species on a remote limestone islet and believe it may represent an extreme case of island dwarfism.

This phenomenon occurs when a species becomes smaller over evolutionary time in order to adapt to a restricted habitat such as an island.

"It is possible that the big island of Madagascar has produced the general group of dwarf chameleons and the very small island has produced the tiny species," he added. (BBC)

World’s longest horn at whopping 9ft 1in/世界最長的牛角 長達277公分 二月 15
  • Seven-year-old JR has horns that measure an incredible 9ft 1in (277cm) long
  • Given his youthful age, they are likely to grow even bigger

A Texas Longhorn bull that more than lives up to its name has smashed the record for the world’s longest horns.

Seven-year-old JR has horns that measure an incredible 9ft 1ins – and they are likely to grow even bigger.

But even though he has a name derived from a character in Dallas, the ultimate Texas television show, JR does not reside in the U.S.

Instead, he is part of the largest herd of Texas Longhorns in Australia, roaming around the 1,100acre Leahton Park estate in Queensland.

He has claimed the Guinness World Record from a bull in Ohio called Shadow Jubilee.

But whereas that animal had horns that are 88ins long, JR’s measure a staggering 109ins from tip-to-tip.

JR is descended from pure Texas Longhorn stock.

His owner Michael Bethel, 50, who runs Leahton Park with his wife Lynda, 39, began breeding Longhorns 14 years ago.

He said: ‘I don’t think JR realises how much attention he’s getting now he’s a record breaker.

‘He’s just happy and healthy, we don’t give him any special treatment, we just let him graze around with the kangaroos like the rest of the heard.

‘He’s only seven so he still has a bit of growing to do yet – they can live until their early 20s – his horns could still get bigger.’

The park opened as a tourist attraction three years ago to allow visitors to take horse-drawn wagon tours to see the Longhorns. (Mail Online)

World’s ‘fattest man, 368-kg Keith, is so huge he needs 18 carers to keep him alive/重368公斤 世界最胖男需18人照顧 二月 13

Weighing in at almost 60 stone (approximately 368.4kg), Keith Martin has not been able to leave his house in 10 years.

With eight men and an extra large stretcher needed to move him, it’s a job only a specialist team can tackle.

But supersize Keith is getting bigger, heavier, and wider and could now be the world’s fattest man.

The heavyweight, from Harlesden, north-west London, is believed to have taken the fattest man title from a 90-stone Mexican called Manuel Urbe, who has gone on a diet and is now a lighter 31st 6lbs.

But despite the accolade, life is a sad existence for Keith who has not had a girlfriend for 20 years.

The 42-year-old, who began binge eating after his mother died when he was a teenager, cannot find clothes to fit him and is forced to lie in bed every day.

‘I blame myself. It was my fault, I hate what I have done to myself’, the former warehouseman told the Daily Star Sunday.

‘My mother died when I was 16 and I didn’t care about anything after that and couldn’t care less what happened to me, I ate anything and everything.’

Keith, who has admitted to eating a couple of roast dinners in a row, is cared for by his two sisters, an ambulance crew of eight, four carers and four nurses.

His story will be featured on a new Channel 5 documentary called Big Body Squad which begins later this month.

The programme follows specialist ambulance teams who take to the road in their £90,000 adapted ambulances designed to transport plus size people.

The larger than life emergency crews are stretched to the limit transporting morbidly obese people who are too big to look after themselves.

Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, said: ‘This is a very thought provoking series that presents hard facts and unearths some interesting findings. Obesity is on the increase in Britain and somebody has got to take the strain. Physically and financially.’

The Guinness World Records have invited Keith to get in contact so it can investigate whether his is officially the fattest man in the world.

Big Body Squad airs on Wednesday, February 22, at 8pm on Channel 5. (Mail Online)

World’s strongest boy does push ups while balancing on glass bottles/世界最壯男童在玻璃瓶上做伏地挺身 二月 01

A new video of the world’s strongest boy doing push ups while being held up on the tops of glass bottles shows that he continues to challenge himself.

The clip, released on YouTube Friday, shows seven-year-old Giuliano Stroe balance his hands and feet using green glass bottles.

Once he steadies himself on the small bottle tops, he proceeds to do 12 push ups.

This is not little Giuliano’s first brush with fame.

The exceptional pre-schooler performed the fastest ever 10m hand walk with a weight ball between his legs in 2009 and was put into the Guinness Book of World Records for the feat.

Father Iulian Stroe, 36, previously said: ‘He has been going to the gym with me ever since he was born. I always took him with me when I went training.’

Mr Stroe now trains both Giuliano and his younger brother Claudiu in their family home in Romania.

He added there is no danger of the youngster harming himself, saying: ‘I have been training hard all my life myself.

‘He is never allowed to practice on his own, he is only a child and if he gets tired we go and play.’

Giuliano, the oldest of four children, says his stardom has not gone to his head and he still enjoys normal kid stuff like painting, watching cartoons and playing in the park when he is not weightlifting.

But it seems he has picked up a taste for fame during his incredible exploits, revealing he enjoys it when he is applauded after performing.

In the four days since the latest video was posted, it has been viewed 146,622 times.

And, in terms of applause, he is getting a mixed bag of virtual appreciation, with 245 ‘likes’ and 169 ‘dislikes’. (Mail Online)

World’s smallest vertebrate: Frog measures just 7mm/世界最小的脊椎動物:尺寸僅7公釐的青蛙 一月 12

Perched on a coin the size of a 5p piece, there is still probably room for two.

At half the size of a Smartie sweet, this is the world’s smallest frog, measuring just a quarter of an inch long.

Scientists discovered the previously unknown creature, speckled in red and black, sitting on a leaf on the tropical island of Papua New Guinea.

At just 7.7mm in size when fully grown, it has snatched the title as the smallest of the world’s 60,000 vertebrates – creatures with a backbone – previously held by a tiny Indonesian fish which measures 7.9mm.

Experts are baffled by the find as it was previously thought extreme body size in vertebrates, whether large or small, was associated with living in water.

Professor Chris Austin, of Louisiana State University, who discovered the frog on a three-month field trip to the Pacific island, said by contrast these creatures make their habitats on fallen leaves on the floor of tropical rainforests.

His discovery of the creatures, named Paedophryne amanuensis after a village called Amau near where they were found, will help scientists understand more about extreme body size, he wrote in the journal PLoS One. (Mail Online)

World’s highest bridge opens/世界最高的橋啟用 一月 07

This is Mexico’s massive Baluarte Suspension Bridge which has just been crowned the highest in the world by the Guinness Book of Records.

The 1000m-long crossing, which has just opened to the public, is more than 400m high and could fit Paris’ Eiffel Tower under its central span.

The cable-stayed bridge – which goes across a deep ravine in Mexico’s Sierra Madre Occidental mountains – took four years to build and cost millions of pounds.

It was built as part of the country’s bicentennial celebrations to mark its independence from Spain in 1810.

It forms a huge highway between Mazatlan on the Pacific Coast to Durango in the interior.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon said: "It is a project which is going to unite the people from the north of Mexico like never before." (The Sun)

World’s oldest twins/世界年紀最大的雙胞胎 一月 05

Two sisters celebrated their 102nd birthday today as officially the oldest twins in the world – and were determined to spend it together.

Ena Pugh and Lily Millward, who were born on 4 January 1910, have always shared their big day with each other.

Lily was yesterday laid up in hospital with a broken hip – nevertheless, she had one special visitor when her twin Ena called to wish her happy birthday.

The pair were given 102nd birthday presents of copies of the Guinness World Records book by their family so they could see their own entry.

Lily’s proud daughter Dianne Powell, 65, told Wales News Service: ‘My mum’s recovering in hospital after she slipped and fell just before Christmas. But she’s in good spirits and enjoying the attention of being one of the world’s oldest twins.

‘Ena pops in to see her in hospital when she can – they are very close. And despite the terrible weather she made a special effort to get together on their birthday.’

Farmer’s daughters Ena and Lily were born before the outbreak of the First World War when Queen Victoria’s son Edward VII was king.

The pair, who still live in their own houses near Brecon in the Welsh countryside, meet up for weekly shopping sessions and chat on the telephone virtually every night.

Great-grandmother Lily revealed the secret of their long life is ‘laughter and having a joke with each other.’

‘We used to work on the farm all day, but we would enjoy ourselves,’ she said. ‘It was a lot of fun and sociable. We’ve been very lucky and we have always had good health.’ (Mail Online)

World’s smallest aquarium/世界最小的水族箱 一月 03

This is the world’s smallest working aquarium – which holds just two tea spoons of water.

The miniature wonder, which is made of glass and measures just 30mm wide by 24mm high and 14mm deep, can be held in the palm of your hand.

And it is so small there is only room for these tiny zebra fish.

Despite the miniscule proportions, it does come with miniature plants as well as stones.

When it came to filling up the tank, the 10ml of water had to be applied with a syringe to ensure the arrangement was not disturbed.

And the fish had to be added with a specially made miniature fish net.

The extraordinary creation is the latest by Anatoly Konenko, from Omsk, in Russia.

The 57-year-old was the first in Siberia to make what he calls ‘microminiature’ art.

During the past three decades he has perfected the painstaking skill of writing on tiny grains of rice, poppy seeds and even human hair.

In 1996 he was even recognised by the Guinness World Records for the smallest ever book.

Measuring just 0.9mm by 0.9mm the 29 page novel, an edition of ‘Chameleon’ by Russian author Anton Chekhov is dwarfed by a five pence piece.

Working with a microscope, he has built up quite a collection of miniature art over the years.

Other creations include a caravan of 12 miniature camels inside the eye of a needle, which measures an incredible 0.25mm.

Mr Konenko has also made an incredibly detailed ship in a bottle, which stands at just 0.25mm high, and a pair of shoes smaller than a matchstick.

Some of his creations are worth as much as 50,000 euros, £44,000.

He said: ‘The tank was made out of curiosity. It is the world’s smallest and holds only 10 ml of water. For reference, 5ml is one teaspoon, so the aquarium can only hold two teaspoons worth of water.’ (Daily Mail)
