Sheep ‘gives birth to dog’/母羊生下狗寶寶 三月 25

A Chinese farmer claims that one of his sheep has given birth to a puppy dog.

The ‘puppy’ has wool like a lamb but it’s mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog’s.

Vets say it is impossible for a sheep to give birth to a dog – but people have been flocking to Liu Naiying’s farm to see the animal for themselves.

Liu, of in Fugu County, Shaanxi Province, says his ‘sheep dog’ even plays like a puppy.

He told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields.

"I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet," he said.

"When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

"I was a bit frightened, as I’ve been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature."

Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi’an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species.

"It’s not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy," he said. "It’s likely that this is just an abnormal lamb." (Orange News)

Schoolboy befriends jackdaw – and now they’re inseparable/英國小學生與寒鴉結為好友 每天形影不離 三月 19

Parents and pupils at St Mary’s RC Primary School in Sunderland complained of being tormented by this jackdaw when it first began appearing at the gates in early December.

It menaced pupils, divebombing children whenever they ventured outside the classroom. Children were so terrified that teachers shortened playtimes and kept them inside to prevent further attacks.

The council even gave the school a high-tech bird scaring device to try to drive it away.

But now, like a real life Kes, the bird has befriended one pupil who passes it on his way to school. Amazingly, the bird started landing on ten-year-old Emmanuel Adams’ shoulder as he walked to class.

His feathered friend, who he has named Jack, has taken a shine to Emmanuel, who says the bird is ‘not a bully’.

Just like the 1969 film Kes, where a Northern schoolboy tames and befriends a wild Kestrel, the bird and the boy have become firm friends.

And for the past few days the curious crow has even been living with the Adams family, alongside three dogs, four fish and Emmanuel’s sisters, Rebecca, 16, Alexi, 11, and Androniki, nine.

Emmanuel’s mother, Carolyn Adams, 46, a full-time mum, said: ‘The bird took an instant liking to Emmanuel, he would approach him as he walked to school. He picked him out from the other schoolkids.

‘One day he just sat on Emmanuel’s arm and from then on he would go to school with the bird perched on his arm or shoulder.

‘A lorry driver nearly crashed watching him, he was so amazed by it.

‘On Tuesday it wouldn’t leave his arm and he walked straight into the house with it. It seems to have settled here and it sits and lets Emmanuel stroke it.

‘Emmanuel has been sat with Jack on his shoulder watching telly and while he had his revision work on his lap, Jack was trying to turn the pages.

‘I’ve got some wild bird feed and I’ve read online that they’re omnivorous so I gave him some of our mince and pasta last night. I’ve given him fruit too.

Mrs Adams admitted she feels bad about having a wild bird in the house and said she has contacted bird charities for advice on looking after Jack. (Mail Online)

Snake dies after biting model’s breasts/蛇咬模特兒胸部後中毒而死 三月 15

Model Orit Fox has unwittingly killed a snake after it bit her surgically-enhanced breasts and died of silicone poisoning.

Fox – Israel’s answer to Katie Price – was handling the normally tame snake on Spanish TV when she attempted to lick its face.

Evidently finding this rather provocative, the snake reacted badly, clamping down on Fox’s ample chest.

Fox was rushed to hospital where she received a tetanus jab, but she suffered no long-term damage.

Unfortunately the snake did not survive.

Fox is a major star in Israel and has undergone several operations to enlarge her breasts. (wrapup)

Sex book with blank pages becomes surprise bestseller/「無字天書」竟成暢銷書 三月 04

An empty book entitled What Every Man Thinks About Apart From Sex has soared up the bestseller charts.

Outselling the likes of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by JK Rowling and The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, ‘Professor’ Sheridan Simove’s publication moved 134,256 places up Amazon’s bestseller list to reach number 744.

The book claims to reveal the mysterious workings of the male mind, providing a probing insight into what, other than sex, occupies their thoughts, and recently featured on the ITV1 show Lorraine, with Lorraine Kelly.

However, each of the 200 pages is completely blank.

It seems the £4.69 journal has become a craze on campuses up and down the country, with students using the blank pages to take notes in lectures.

R The book’s ‘author’ said of the sales: ‘When the book was published I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would outsell Harry Potter.

‘But Britain’s students seem to think my book is magic and who am I to argue?’

Prof Simove went on to reveal that the subject matter tackled in the book was thoroughly researched.

‘After many years of hard work I finally realised that men think of absolutely nothing apart from sex,’ he added.

‘It was a shocking conclusion and I realised that the world needed to be informed of my findings.’

Currently sitting at the top of the Amazon list is celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s latest offering, 30-Minute Meals, providing quick and easy dishes to allow men more free time to, presumably, think about sex. (Metro)

Virgin Mary spotted in cliff face by startled tourist/英遊客拍到聖母瑪麗亞「出巡」靈異照片 三月 04

A holidaymaker was stunned when she took a photograph of a craggy coastline and captured this spooky image – of the Virgin Mary.

The hooded figure is seen holding her arms out-stretched in a cradling action sheltered beneath rocks at Newquay’s Western Beach, Cornwall.

Caroline and Stephen Gray were walking along the coastline on Valentine’s Day when they stopped to pose for a series of holiday snaps.

But Caroline, 38, was speechless when the couple returned home and studied the digital camera to spot a clear image of the Virgin Mary, which she insists was not present when she took the picture.

And now the receptionist, from Chester, Cheshire, believes the photo could spark a rush of worshippers to flock to the coastal resort to catch a glimpse of the religious icon. (wrapup)

Fox found at top of UK’s highest skyscraper/小狐狸攀上英國最高摩天大樓頂端 二月 26

A fox dubbed Romeo has been found living on the 72nd floor of Europe’s tallest skyscraper surviving off scraps of food left by construction workers.

Romeo spent two weeks roaming free and surviving on scraps of food left by builders at the 288 metre Shard building at London Bridge, which is still under construction.

The fox had managed to make his way to the top of the tower via the central stairwell.

Romeo was caught by Southwark Council pest control officers and taken to Riverside Animal Centre in Wallington where the hungry explorer was given a thorough medical and a few good meals.

He was then released back into the London Bridge area.

Ted Burden, Riverside Animal Centre founder said: ‘We explained to him that if foxes were meant to be 72 storeys off the ground, they would have evolved wings.

‘We think he got the message and, as we released him back on to the streets of Bermondsey shortly after midnight on Sunday, he glanced at the Shard and then trotted off in the other direction,’ added Mr Burden.

Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for transport, environment and recycling at Southwark Council, said: ‘Romeo has certainly been on a bit of a jaunt, and proved rather elusive, but I’m glad our pest control officers were able to help out.

‘He’s obviously a resourceful little chap, but I’m sure he’s glad the adventure is over and hopefully he’ll steer well clear of skyscrapers in the future.’ (The Sun/Metro)

Postcard arrives – 94 years late/明信片94年後才寄達 二月 24

A postcard from a First World War soldier about to be shipped off to war has finally arrived – 94 years later and to the wrong address.

Alfred Arthur, then 19, wrote to his sister Ellen – known as Nell – in January 1916 from his camp in Newhaven, East Sussex, the day before he was sent to France.

The message reads: "Dear Nell, just a postcard to let you know I have not forgotten you. On the other side you will see our orders for next week. Poor me, I shall need your pity. Drop me a line, from brother Alfred."

However, the postcard did not reach its destination before Alfred died two years later at the Hindenburg Line at Grecourt and his sister Nell died in 1964.

In fact, when the postcard was finally delivered 95 years late, it was put through the door of the house opposite the actual address in Norwich, where Lauren Bleach lives.

Lauren, 61, said: "It came with the rest of the post. We couldn’t believe our eyes. At first we found it amusing that it had taken 94 years for Royal Mail to deliver it, and even then they delivered it to the wrong door.

"But then as we started to read what the postcard said we were so emotionally taken by it."

With the aid of a local genealogist, Lauren traced one of Alfred’s great-nephews, Brian Buxton, and his great-niece, Angela Finch, and handed over the postcard.

Brian, 68, from Norwich, said: "It’s unbelievable and also very sad. He tragically died yet he didn’t know that she hadn’t received it.

"I feel sorry for Nellie – they were close yet she never heard from him. But I’m glad that this has finally been delivered to her family." (Orange News)

An egg within an egg/蛋中蛋 二月 22

Finding a double yolk at breakfast is considered lucky – but one pensioner was amazed when he cracked open an egg only to find a complete miniature one inside.

Retired farmer John Fellows, 68, had been making scrambled eggs when he cracked open the large outer shell of the ordinary chicken egg.

But when he put it aside to clean up, he spotted the a smaller egg the size of a marble inside.

Mr Fellows said it was the first egg within an egg he had ever seen and that he would be keeping the mini-egg for posterity.

Experts say the rare phenomenon is just a quirk of nature and can occur if the chicken receives a shock during egg production.

Mr Fellows, a grandfather-of-four from Weymouth, Dorset, said: ‘It was just amazing.

‘I was making scrambled eggs for my breakfast and used an ordinary egg I bought from the chap down the road who has a stall.

‘It was quite big – around half the size again of the normal large egg – so I thought it might be a double yolker.

‘I put the shell down on the side and didn’t think anything of it while I ate the eggs. They tasted just the same as usual.

Robert Newbery, chief poultry adviser for the National Farmers Union, said the double shell was ‘a peculiarity of Mother Nature’ and was safe to eat.

He said: ‘I’ve heard about this before but it’s very unusual.

‘This is a peculiarity of Mother Nature.’

Douglas Russell, of the Natural History Museum, said the ‘ovum in ovo’ has attracted scholarly attention for hundreds of years.

He said: ‘Several theories have been proposed.

‘The most likely suggests that the normal rhythmic muscular action, or peristalsis, that moves a developing egg down the oviduct malfunctions in some way.’

The hens’ egg was bought from a stall at the Littlemoor Shopping Precinct, Weymouth. (Mail Online)

Hen’s egg eight times heavier than normal/比一般重8倍的雞蛋 二月 21

For a free-range hen who just laid an egg more than eight times heavier than normal, Hattie the hen seems remarkably unruffled.

The egg weighs a hefty 5.7oz, is three and a half inches long and eight inches in circumference.

Hattie’s owner Jeremy Paget, 50, who has been rearing his nine chickens for only six months, said of Thursday’s find:

‘My wife brought it in to me and asked me to close my eyes and said, “I’ve got a present for you”. We were absolutely gobsmacked.’

He now plans to use the egg to make an enormous omelette.

The financial consultant, of Four Marks, Hampshire, said Hattie did not seem particularly concerned afterwards.

It’s not the first time recently that a chicken has laid an enormous or strangely shaped egg.

Last summer Harriet the hen laid an egg 4.5 inches long with a 9.1-inch circumference – both measurements half an inch longer than the previous record holder.

In Newquay last autumn a hotel chef preparing breakfast was left shell-shocked today after discovering a perfectly round egg, a billion-to-one discovery.

Hens’ eggs are usually 2.3 inches long and have a circumference of 5.5 inches.

The heaviest hen’s egg on record so far weighed an astonishing 16oz. (Mail Online)

It’s a miracle! Blind man, 76, sees again after kissing picture of his late wife/英76歲盲男親吻亡妻照片後奇蹟似復明 二月 17

A blind pensioner who was told he would never see again has miraculously regained his sight – while kissing a photograph of his late wife as he prepared for bed.

George Hudspeth has been registered blind for 10-years after he was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration. He lost his sight completely one year ago and expected to live the rest of his life in darkness.

But last week his vision suddenly returned moments after he held a photograph of his late wife Sheila, who died in November 2009.

The former Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant was so ecstatic he stayed up all night until 5am watching television in case his sight went again.

It means the 76-year-old grandfather has seen his baby granddaughter for the first time following the incredible recovery, which has baffled eye specialists.

Mr Hudspeth, from Daventry, Northamptonshire, said: ‘I want to tell the world because I am sitting on top of Mount Everest shouting "I can see."

‘I can’t explain it. I can’t find the right words. I can see just as well as anybody else. It is truly incredible and I couldn’t be happier.’

Doctors had previously told him that he would never be able to see again after the condition worsened last year. Both Mr Hudspeth’s father and sister had gone blind through the condition.

But last Tuesday, the former serviceman’s life changed when his sight miraculously returned.

Now the pensioner has his sights set on finding love. His wife Shelia died from pneumonia aged 51.

He said: ‘Now I can see, I would love to be able to have a partner to share it all with. I am looking for a nice lady, someone who I can share a kiss and cuddle with.’ (Daily Mail)
