Man had blade in face for four years/刀片埋在男子臉上長達4年 二月 17

Doctors in China examined a patient complaining of headaches and a bad taste in his mouth – and found a 4ins blade buried in his face.

They say it had been in Li Fu’s face for four years without his knowledge, since he was stabbed in a robbery while working as a cab driver.

Doctor Xu Wen, vice-director of stomatology at Yu Xi City People’s Hospital, said: "We were amazed to see such a long blade in his face.

"And it’s even more amazing to think that the blade had been there for more than four years and the patient was still living without too many problems."

He is now recovering after surgeons removed the blade, which had penetrated his tongue root, muscles and brain, in a complicated four hour operation.

Li, 37, of Yuanjiang County, Yunnan Province, was stabbed in September, 2006, after he resisted a knifepoint robbery.

He was treated at a local hospital where doctors cleaned his wound and gave him disinfectant shots.

"The wound healed up gradually and I didn’t have any other symptoms, so I didn’t think of having further checkups," said Li.

Police later caught the criminal and found the broken knife handle – but they never found the blade until Li was x-rayed at a county hospital.

Doctors there referred him to Yu Xi City People’s Hospital which agreed to waive some of the £5,000 fees for the complex operation. (Orange News)

Woman gives birth to own grandson/阿嬤生下自己的孫子 二月 14

A 61 year-old woman in the US has given birth to her own grandson.

Kristine Casey acted as a surrogate for daughter Sara Connell after she was unable to have children of her own.

Mrs Connell and her husband Bill are the biological parents of the boy, who is called Finnean.

The 35 year-old lecturer sat holding her mother’s hand as she delivered the baby boy at a hospital in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

She said her mother, who gave birth to her last child almost 30 years ago, had offered to act as a surrogate when she suffered years of heartache trying to conceive.

Mrs Connell said she underwent IVF treatment in 2004 but delivered stillborn twins, and later she suffered a miscarriage.

She said when she heard her son cry for the first time after the caesarean section delivery she could not hold back the emotion.

"I lost it," Mrs Connell said. "It’s such a miracle."

Mrs Casey, a mother-of-three, said she was grateful to be able to help her daughter.

"The three of the happiest days of my life were giving birth to my daughters,’ and I thought I could choose to do this for someone I love," she said.

Mrs Casey underwent multiple tests to evaluate her medical and psychological health, as required by Illinois law on surrogate births.

She fell pregnant after he second course of IVF treatment and gave birth after 39 weeks.

Mrs Casey, who is from Virginia, is believed to be the oldest person in the state of Illinois to give birth.

"The emotional context of this delivery was so profound," said Dr Susan Gerber, an obstetrician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where the baby boy was born. (wrapup)

Sea nomads of Indonesia/印尼的海上游牧民族 二月 10

Swimming beneath the warm waters off Sulawesi, Indonesia, little Enal playfully holds onto the tail of a shark almost as big as he is.

Enal is one of the Bajau – or sea nomads – who count sharks as family pets and have lived their lives for centuries on the ocean and not on land.

The people and their remarkable habits were documented in a photo diary for six months by young British photographer James Morgan.

James lived as one of the tribe sharing their small house boats, known as Lepa Lepa, and learning to free dive without oxygen to depths of 50 feet.

James, 24, who only left Sussex University last year, was able to record the fascinating lives of the Bajau, whose way of life is now under threat from the modern world.

He said due to environmental pressure and government intervention this could be the last generation of people who will still live at sea.

He said: ‘The little boy in one of my pictures is Enal and, yes, he does have a pet shark.

‘As a people, the Bajau have an incredible affinity with the ocean and the life that lives there.

‘To take that particular shot I was free diving, there was no way I could carry oxygen equipment with me, but it was worth it to record how Enal played with the shark just like a boy or girl in Britain would play with the family dog.

‘The Bajau live on boats known as Lepa Lepa, which are about five metres by one metre, and they spend their entire lives at sea.

‘This could be the last generation that can afford to live at sea because of many reasons.

James, who is originally from Bournemouth, Hampshire, was funded for the project by the Royal Photographic Society in the UK.

He said: ‘My main aim from meeting this people and sharing their lives for a short time is to bring their plight to the attention of the rest of the world.

‘The Bajau’s way of life may be lost forever soon, and something needs to be done to help them.’ (Daily Mail)

Horse becomes a pub regular/英國種馬成為酒吧常客 二月 10

A horse called Basil has finally been allowed into his local pub in Staffordshire for a refreshing pint.

The Welsh Cob stallion visits his favoured watering hole every Sunday at the Meynell Ingram Arms in Burton, Staffordshire.

He enjoys mingling with the locals as he relaxes and sups on his favourite tipple in the country boozer.

His favourite drink is the locally brewed ale Marson’s Pedigree, which is always waiting for him at the bar in his very own glass.

Manager Guy Wallis added: said: "Basil is one of a kind. He’s been coming in the pub for years.

"After he’s been for a ride he loves nothing more than to come inside for a quiet pint, with the locals.

"He’s very cool and this is his ideal place to relax. He’s a hit with the locals and everyone loves having him around.

"It doesn’t seem strange having him in the pub, because he’s like one of the regulars, he just pokes his head round the door and comes in and has a drink, just like everyone else."

But the nine-year-old 14.2 hands pony has been trying to get in for years, before the landlord gave in and let Basil drink his favourite brew.

"His owners have been coming here for over ten years and he would always try and get his hoof in the door," he added.

"But we couldn’t deny him anymore and so he’s been coming with them the last few years.

"If he’s lucky we"ll give him some vegetables to go with his pint.

"I think it’s fantastic that pubs still have animals through the doors, just like the old days, we encourage all country life and animals are welcome here.

He’s become such a regular customer here that I’ve given him his own glass, which he drinks from every time.

Basil’s owner Wendy and Harvey Milnes said they love having him with them and sharing a pint together.

Mr Milnes said: "When I was having a pint of Pedigree, Basil would put his lips round the glass and clearly loved the smell.

"So I gave him a taste and he’s loved it ever since, but he’s not in any way a lager fan, he sticks to ale.

"We’ve never got him drunk because we obviously don’t want to turn him into an alcoholic, but he’s allowed the occasional tipple." (wrapup)

Doctors put left foot on right leg/病人左腳被接到右腳以便日後再接回 二月 08

Doctors in China attached a patient’s severed left foot onto the calf of his right leg in a desperate bid to save it.

Ma Jun, 36, lost his foot after he slipped into a concrete mixer while working on a building site in Zhengzhou, Henan Province.

He was rushed to hospital along with his severed foot but his left leg was too badly damaged for it to be reattached.

"The injury was too severe, and the wound was highly contaminated," said Doctor Song Wenchao.

"We had to cut off more than 2cm of dead muscle and bone from the left leg so we attached the foot to his right leg instead."

The foot was transplanted onto the calf of Ma’s right leg in a complicated 12 hour operation.

Dr Song added: "While it is hosted by the right leg, the left foot can grow new skin, tissue and muscles. It is normal and pink-coloured so the blood is circulating smoothly."

He is now planning a second operation to reattach the foot to the left leg, followed by further surgery to reconstruct the calf.

"If he recovers as well as we hope, he could be walking normally within four months," said Dr Song. (Orange News)

Mother gives birth to baby weighing over 13lb/美婦產下逾6公斤重巨嬰 二月 07

Now that’s what you call hard labour.

A baby boy weighing nearly a stone has been born in Massachusetts – and he was delivered naturally.

He was so big that the doctor delivering the baby even told the mother, ‘Wait, I have to get my camera for this’.

Mother Amanda Byron gave birth to 13lb 2.6oz Jonathan Patrick in Methuen.

She had been told to prepare herself for a large baby when she went for her last ultrasound scan – but no one expected he would be quite that big.

When he was first born, they plopped him right on me and it took my breath away in more than one way,’ Miss Byron told the Boston Channel, adding that it only took ‘ten minutes’ for him to arrive.

Miss Byron’s mother, Linda, said: ‘I panicked when his head was out. I just wanted to yell at her push, push!’

Jonathan Patrick was born at the Holy family Hospital on Thursday.

His father, Eric Rozzi, said: ‘We’ve had a lot of nurses come by and say, "wow".

‘We have had a lot of people come by and say, "He can be the next centre for the Celtics or a lineman for the Patriots",’ he added.

The average birth weight for babies in America is 7.5lb – so Jonathan Patrick is almost twice as heavy as your usual newborn.

However, he is still a way off beating the record.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, a baby boy weighing 23lb 12oz was born to a Canadian mother in 1879. He died after just 11 hours. (Daily Mail)

Unluckiest man in the world/世上最衰的人 一月 29

Man stabbed with knife, robbed at gunpoint, locked in taxi boot, and bitten by two snakes at same time struck by lightning while on phone

He’s the self-titled ‘unluckiest man in the world’, and you can sort of see why – John Wade Agan has been taken to hospital, AGAIN, after he was struck by lightning while using a landline telephone in his Florida home.

The 47-year-old was taken to Tampa General Hospital, and said he had woken up surrounded by paramedics with a hole burned in his sock.

The last thing he remembers is leaning over a metal sink, with a severe storm raging outside, speaking on the phone.

Agan has hit headlines in the past because of his extraordinary misfortune, which included an incident four years ago when he was robbed at gunpoint while driving his taxi and got locked in the boot.

He also suffered injuries after being stabbed in the chest with a butcher’s knife in 2008, and, more recently in 2009, he claimed he was bitten by two snakes at the same time.

Although experts have questioned whether all his injuries are genuine – especially the snake incident and now the lightning strike – he stands by his claims.

Some have suggested he is an attention seeker, or even self-harming (in the most bizarre ways possible) in order to receive pain medication.

But this time he also has the word of his daughter, Misty, to back him up as she was at home when he was apparently befallen by the freak bolt from the sky.

‘I don’t care what people say. Any day of the week, I’ll go take a [lie detector] test,’ Mr Agan told the St Petersburg Times. (Metro)

Lake that glows in the dark/晚上會發藍光的湖泊 一月 28

Swimming is supposed to give you a healthy glow, but these swimmers weren’t quite sure what was going on when they took a late-night dip and turned a fluorescent shade of blue.

‘It was like we were playing with radioactive paint,’ said photographer Phil Hart who snapped the bizarre sight as his friends emerged from a lake in the dark of night.

The light is created by a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which happens when a naturally-occuring micro-organism in the water is disturbed.

Phil, 34, put his camera on a very slow shutter speed and threw sand and stones into the water to cause the reaction and capture as much of the blue haze as possible.

These images are particularly stunning because the concentration of the micro-organism ‘Noctiluca Scintillans’ was abnormally high when he took the photos at Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia.

Phil said: ‘To be there watching this bioluminescence is spellbinding and to see it like this is very rare.

‘I am a program director with an organisation that has been running canoeing camps on the Gippsland Lakes for 50 years. Nobody can remember the bioluminescence ever being as bright as this.

It is believed the combination of bushfires and floods created the high levels of nutrients in the lakes for the organisms to feed.

‘It may not happen again in my lifetime,’ said Phil. ‘I feel fortunate to have been there to see it and to have had my camera gear there to record it.’

Phil, from Melbourne, added: ‘While the luminescence was obvious to the eye, the bright blue colour is only apparent in photos.

‘When the first photo I took appeared on screen I could hardly believe it – the people in the water looked freakish. (Mail Online)

Grandpa at 29 after daughter 14 falls pregnant/14歲女兒懷孕 英男29歲當阿公 一月 26

A man of 29 who is set to become Britain’s youngest grandfather when his teenage daughter gives birth was today criticised for trying to ‘cash in’ on the pregnancy.

The soon-to-be record breaker was earlier said to be "fuming" that his 14-year-old daughter was 11 weeks pregnant because she was due to start her school exam courses.

But neighbours said he was in fact celebrating because more state benefits would be given to his family – and said he had bragged about "making a fortune" on selling his story.

The man – whose identity is being kept a secret to protect his young daughter – is now said to be in negotiations to sell his family’s story to a Sunday newspaper.

But before talks with the tabloid had begun, the man said: "It’s like history repeating itself".

"I quite like the idea of being the youngest grandad in Britain, but at the same time I’m fuming that she is pregnant.

"I know myself how tough it is being a teenage parent and now she has to go through the same thing.

"However, we’re all going to stand by her and we will welcome the little one into the family. She is very young, but she was determined to keep the child. We were not going to force her into doing anything else. We don’t want her to hate us."

He added: "I don’t feel like a grandad. I’ve not got grey hair and my hearing is top notch."

But a mother in her 30s who lives nearby said: "He just wants it to be all about him. He should realise how serious it is.

"If it was my daughter pregnant so young I certainly wouldn’t be singing about it."

Speaking from his home in South Wales, the man admitted he became a father back in 1996 when he was just 14.

He said his own mother, who is 47, is excited about the prosepct of being a great-grandmother.

"She was 18 when she had me," he said. "She was shocked when I told her the news, but she is happy now.

"Her own mum is alive, and so too is her grandmother, who will become a great-great-great grandmother.

"There can’t be too many families with six generations alive at the same time." (wrapup)

Woman’s life saved by waiting taxi as she lands on its roof after falling from 23rd storey/女子23樓落下掉在計程車上 倖免於難 一月 25

<30-year-old being treated for serious multiple injuries in Buenos Aires hospital>

A woman survived throwing herself from the 23rd storey of a Buenos Aires hotel when a waiting taxi broke her fall.

She landed in a sitting position on the driver’s side of the car – just moments after the cabbie had got out of his vehicle.

The impact deeply dented roof and shattered the windscreen.

The taxi driver, who gave his name as Miguel, said he saw a policeman looking up and that prompted him to get out just before the driver’s side of the car was smashed by the woman’s body.

Another taxi driver, Juan Carlos Candame said that he saw the woman climb over a barrier and jump.

The woman fell from the top of the Hotel Crown Plaza Panamericano, where a restaurant overlooks the landmark Obelisk in central Buenos Aires. (Mail Online)
