Cockatoo makes four-legged friend by feeding dog NOODLES/鸚鵡與狗結為好友 還餵狗吃麵 二月 22

Maybe he thought they were worms.

This bird made an unlikely four-legged friend after feeding a dog noodles from the kitchen counter top.

The pair have a Lady and the Tramp moment as the cockatoo bobs his way toward his furry companion to share a string of spaghetti.

The eager pooch licks his chops as he waits for the next bite.

Fortunately for his winged friend, the dog doesn’t seem too hungry as he takes a nibble from his beak.

At one point, it even appears as though the bird dips the noodles sauce sitting nearby, and feeds it to the dog as if he were a youngling.

A spectator had a camera on hand to record the bizarre meal for a video that is now sweeping the web.

‘Bird Feeds Dog Noodles’, uploaded by YouTube user xxImmortalDreamerxx has earned over 150,000 views since it was uploaded on December 18. (Daily Mail)

Birds take on squirrel in battle for a biscuit/鳥與松鼠爭奪餅乾 二月 08

This squirrel must have thought he had hit the jackpot when he stumbled across a discarded savory biscuit delight, but one group of woodland birds had other ideas.

As the care-free squirrel nibbled on his lunch he was interrupted by the pesky group of hungry birds in a move that really took the biscuit.

The cluster of feathered friends surrounded the careless squirrel, while the ringleader of the pack made his move for the prize bounty.

As the feisty creature clamped down on one side of the biscuit, the pair locked into an unexpected tug-of-war in a fight to the finish.

The encounter took place at Etosha National Park, Namibia, and was caught on camera by wildlife photographer Ignacio Yufera.

While England’s grey squirrels have widely been blamed for decreasing British bird numbers over the last 40 years, it seems it may be the opposite in South Africa. (wrapup)

Kitten and chick snuggle up together/小貓和小雞依偎在一起 二月 07

Chickens can sometimes end up as lunch for cats but that’s not the case for this kitten and chick who were pictured snuggling up together.

If the classic Warner Bros cartoon featuring Sylvester and Tweety Bird is anything to go by then these two animals should be nowhere near each other.

These two friends are either too young to know any better or just don’t care.

Normally they would spend their lives trying to avoid one another but they have somehow become the best of friends.

The animals were brought together by a five-year-old who offered them both shelter after they found themselves abandoned.

Maria Fedorov brought the hungry stray kitten home and her parents agreed she could keep it.

The next day she saved a chick from the claws of another cat and to the family’s surprise they instantly became best friends.

Maria’s father, Alexander, from, Moscow, Russia, took this endearing photo of the pair together. (Metro)

The little grey animal, who learned her skills from the farm’s border collies, hops around the sheep and they look genuinely worried and begin to move in the right direction.

When the flock pauses, he gets them going again by hopping in their direction.

New species of ‘Pac-Man frog’ discovered in South American jungle/南美叢林發現「小精靈」蛙 一月 30

A new species of frog has been discovered by scientists hidden deep inside the South American jungle.

Scientists also unearthed another 45 species during a three-year project where they were helped by tribes who live in villages along the Kutari and Sipaliwini Rivers in Suriname.

The creature has been named the ‘Pac-Man Frog’(see the pic below) after the video game character as it has a mouth as wide as its body and can swallow whole its prey of fish, other frogs and even mice.

Dozens of insects were also discovered including a vivid blue beetle the size of a snooker ball, called Great Horned beetle (see the pic below). A new kind of katydid, nicknamed the ‘Crayola Katydid’, was also thought to have been found during the trip.

Another potentially new species of frog was spotted and nicknamed the ‘cowboy’ thanks to the white fringes down its legs and a spur-like mass on each heel.

An ‘armoured’ catfish (see the pic below), covered in spines was caught – a natural deterrent for giant piranhas which also swim the inhospitable waters. Eight other new species of freshwater fish were found during the expedition which ended in 2010.

The discoveries were made by Conservation International, a non-profit team of scientists who were helped in their journey into one of the world’s densest jungles by local guides. In total, they documented almost 1,300 species along the Kutari and Sipaliwini Rivers.

Trond Larsen, director of the program, said: ‘As a scientist, it is thrilling to study these remote forests where countless new discoveries await, especially since we believe that protecting these landscapes while they remain pristine provides perhaps the greatest opportunity for maintaining globally important biodiversity and the ecosystems people depend upon for generations to come.’

Suriname has a population of half a million people with most living in the capital Paramaribo or along the Atlantic Coast. It the smallest independent country in South America.

A similar trip to the country by researchers in 2007 unearthed 24 new species. (Mail Online)

The hapless amorous tortoise who only managed a little bit of tumble/公龜嘿咻後跌得四腳朝天 一月 21

This hapless little chap has proved the old adage that when you are a tortoise you should make love slowly … and carefully.

But when this African Spurred Tortoise forgot the common sense advice he got himself into a spot of bother and all in front of an audience.

He even drew a round of applause for his public display of affection.

The amorous specimen ignored spectators at Kiev Zoo in Ukraine to make some sweet music with the lady of his choice.

It was only after he had exclaimed his delight, with a groan audible to the gathered visitors, that he got himself into a position he couldn’t easily get out of – and landed on his back.

After what spectators say was some frenzied love-making, a relative term given that the little chap is a species not famed for speed, he completely lost his balance during the excitement and fell over.

And there he stayed for a good ten minutes while onlookers started to worry for his safety.

He stopped eating and lay still and had to be righted by a zoo keeper.

The remarkable photos charting the brief encounter were taken by amateur photographer Vadym Shevchenko, 34.

He said: ‘I think i was really lucky to see the mating process. When the male tortoise finished it fell off onto its back.

‘I decided to wait and see what would happen next. Would he be able to turn around or not. For some time the male was totally still – without any movement. He even stopped chewing the leaves which he was chewing all the time they were mating.’

‘I stayed for another ten minutes and the male tortoise was still on his back trying to turn around – though without any success. I think zoo workers helped him in the end.

‘During the mating process there were almost no sounds. Just some quiet sound of chewing. But right before the falling on his back he produced a very loud sound of satisfaction.

‘The beginning of it falling off was so slow that it was like watching a falling tree.

‘All the spectators were amazed by the sound and falling down and were talking and joking about it for some time. After the male turtle fall on his back – there was a totally quiet pause. And then the crowd burst into applause.’ (wrapup)

Lizard saves his pal from falling off a plant with incredible human-like grip/蜥蜴像人一樣抓住要掉下的同伴 一月 20

This male lizard went from catching some rays to catching his friend — as a pal almost fell from the plant they were sunbathing on.

The pair of lizards were happily basking in the sunshine together when one moved a bit too suddenly and rocked the plant, causing his mate to lose balance and topple from his perch.

But just as he looked certain to fall to the ground, the brave leaping lizard dived to the rescue and helped his buddy down while barely clinging on to the plant stem.

The drama was captured by photographer Alexey Tymoshenko, 19.

Alexey, from Ukraine, said: "I took these pictures by my parents’ summer house when I was visiting one day.

"When I was younger I used to play with the lizards and they become very friendly after they get used to you, usually after about half an hour.

"Once they understand you won’t do them any harm they allow you to do anything — play with them, photograph them and so on.

"But I never thought they could be so strong and helpful to each other when disaster strikes.

"I was really surprised by the scene but I was really glad I had my camera ready and pointing at them both." (wrapup)

Now meet Mathilda, the world’s newest snake/世界最新的蛇 有兩支尖角 一月 12

The world’s newest snake has menacing-looking yellow and black scales, dull green eyes and two spiky horns. And it’s named after a seven-year-old girl.

Matilda’s Horned Viper was discovered in a small patch of southwest Tanzania about two years ago and was introduced last month as the world’s newest known snake species in an issue of the journal Zootaxa.

Tim Davenport, the director of the Wildlife Conservation Society in Tanzania, was on the three-person team that discovered the viper.

So it is thanks to his daughter that the snake will always carry the slightly-less-than-fearsome name.

‘My daughter, who was five at the time, became fascinated by it and used to love spending time watching it and helping us look after it,’ said Davenport.

‘We called it Matilda’s Viper at that stage… and then the name stuck.’

Only three new vipers have been discovered across Africa the last three decades, making the find rare and important.

The Wildlife Conservation Society is not revealing exactly where the snake lives so that trophy hunters can’t hunt it.

Davenport said he is not sure how many live in the wild because snake counts are hard to do. Twelve live in captivity and a breeding plan is being carried out.

Davenport, a Briton who has lived in Tanzania for 12 years, said that while many people fear snakes, most are harmless and help keep rodent numbers down.

Matilda’s Horned Viper can grow to 2ft or bigger, he said.

‘This particular animal looks fierce and probably is venomous (though bush viper bites are not fatal),’ said Davenport.

‘However, it is actually very calm animal and not at all aggressive. I have handled one on a number of occasions.’

The Wildlife Conservation Society runs the Bronx Zoo and the Central Park Zoo in New York, and Davenport said it would be a ‘great option’ to showcase the new horned viper at one of those locations, but that nothing has yet been decided. (Mail Online)
