A photographer spent half a year with her head in the clouds – taking pictures of every letter of the alphabet in the spaces between buildings.

Lisa Rienermann, 30, spent six months wandering the winding streets of picturesque Barcelona looking upwards and trying to find every letter of the alphabet.

But her quest only began after a chance spotting of the letter ‘q’ – which she saw when glancing to the sky in her favourite bar in the city.

The letter had been formed by the curve of a pretty courtyard and the narrow street which leads people into it.

The novel photos have been put into a book called ‘Type the Sky’.

She said: ‘Barcelona is beautiful anyway – especially the old part of the town with the narrow streets.

‘Every time you look up you can only see a small part of the sky and nothing else because there are houses each side.

‘But about three minutes from where I was staying there was a round courtyard and the local bar, and when I looked up I always saw a ‘q’.

‘Because I found that I thought maybe I could find the other letters – so I tried it.

‘It took me half a year from ‘q’ to find every last letter.’

Lisa, from Berlin, Germany, revealed the full alphabet is unique to the quaint architecture in some of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

She added: ‘I tried it in Berlin but it didn’t work because the houses and streets are too far apart.

‘They are very awkward streets in Barca – it would never work in New York because the way the buildings are made are like a chequer board.

‘I did an exhibition in Florence and found a lot there because the streets are similarly awkward and windy.

‘I just collected a few letters to spell out ‘Grazie’ for the people of gallery to say thank you to them for showing my work.’

Lisa, who studied communication design at Folkwang University in Essen, Germany, where her love of typography stemmed from, collected the alphabet two years ago. (Daily Mail)
